Who can resist the quaint informality of this rustic finish? 3-Dimensional texture (cracks & bumps) was added before anything was painted.

Metallic Glaze on Chair Rail
Monroe, CT
Metallic paints are "hot" right now in modern design. --This chair rail was rubbed with several layers of transparent metallic paints. The appearance is subtle and appears to shimmer when walking around the room.
Antiqued Armoire
Granby, CT
(The piece was originally painted white.)
This armoire was originally painted factory-white. My job was to transform it into a much-loved heirloom.
Being an antique-collector, I have much experience in appreciating and studying the wear-patterns and patinas associated with quality heirlooms. I think I successfully transferred that knowledge to this piece.
Another detail of the engaging informality of this rustic heirloom, which was originally painted white!

Strié
Westport, CT
Vibrant streaks of crimson were dragged over a vermilion wall. It adds an exotic, modern feeling to the room.

French Glaze
Norwalk, CT
These seafoam-green walls were treated with an airy, informal French glaze to relax the rigid formality of the old bathroom tile.
If you want stripes painted well in your home, do NOT go with an ordinary painter. (I've heard too many horror-stories from clients needing me to come-in & fix bad paint jobs.)
Michael has years of experience painting stripes with precision and without headaches. (Warning: do NOT ask your typical home-painter to do these for you! I'm often called by home-owners who need me to fix "nightmare" stripe-jobs.)

A very subtle, swirling cloud-of-gold lends character to this Tribeca apartment foyer. --Tribeca, Manhattan, New York

Textured Raw Silk
Manhattan, NY
A subtle, vertical texture has been dragged over these walls to add height and interest to the otherwise small space.
The textured, vertical finish has been continued onto the wall heaters.
Faux Grass-Cloth
(over wall-plates)
Oyster Bay, NY
Plastic electrical-plates can destroy the "look" of a beautiful wall. These plates were painted to resemble (and blend into) the grass-cloth wallpaper.
A rustic, Tuscan finish helps to warm-up the appearance of this otherwise-ignored wall.
This rustic finish creates a relaxed, informal atmosphere and serves as a perfect backdrop for the client's living room.
One can't help but feel soothed and impressed by this custom feature-wall.
Tuscan-Look Wall
Greenwich, CT
This railing was originally an unstained, bright pine color, which looked a bit too "unfinished" for the house. This antiquing stain was just what was needed to give the wood a well-loved look that stands out against the light walls.

The chevron-pattern need not be black and white. Here, a taupe is used. (From a photo found by the client: contemporary bedroom by Lauren Mikus.)

This butler's pantry has been antiqued with an ebonizing glaze and a mahogany under-painting. To showcase the beautiful craftsmanship, the edges were rubbed before the black glaze cured.
These cabinets were originally painted a blinding, factory-white. By toning-down the color and detailing the surface with a custom antique stain, the room became more "home-like" an is a happy spot to make family memories.

Informal faux-finishes:
Metallic Finishes
A cutting-edge designer favorite. This textured finish combines the subtle shimmer of metallic paint through gaps of a rough plaster artistically-scraped onto the wall.
The subtle metallic shimmer of bronze contrasts with the rough plaster overcoat. --This is becoming a popular finish for small spaces.
Metallic 'Knockdown' in powder-room.

Delicate pinstripes require the eye and talent of an artist. (The reason this is called a "pin-stripe" is due to the addition of a narrow stripe at the edge of each larger stripe.)
The walls of this powder-room were rubbed with luxurious metallic paints: a "hot" trend in modern design.
These delicately-rubbed metallic surfaces reflect light throughout this intimate and sophisticated powder-room.

Tip: Never request an ordinary painter to do these finishes.

These techniques "look" simple, but require an artist's eye & patience.
